Customs

be prepared when crossing the border!

According to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), all U.S. and Canadian travelers must present “a passport or other document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the U.S.”

These documents enable the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably identify travelers crossing our borders.

If you are planning to cross the Windsor Detroit border, you are required to present one of the following documents (see here for more information):

valid passport and visa

This is an internationally-recognized travel document that verifies a person’s identity and nationality. It is accepted for travel by air, land and sea.

U.S. PASSPORT CARD

This is a new, limited-use travel document that fits in your wallet and costs less than a U.S. Passport. It is only valid for travel by land and sea.

ALIEN CARD

This is a card issued to lawful U.S. permanent residents.

ENHANCED DRIVER’S LICENSE (EDL)

Several states and Canadian provinces are issuing this driver’s license or identification document that denotes identity and citizenship. It is specifically designed for cross-border travel into the U.S. by land or sea.

ONE OF THE TRUSTED TRAVELER PROGRAM CARDS

NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST enrollment cards can speed your entry into the U.S. and are issued only to pre-approved, low-risk travelers.

For more information about each of these documents, or special groups, please see Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative or Canada Border Service Agency.

HAVE YOUR DOCUMENTS READY

Know what documents are required, and have them ready when you cross the Windsor Detroit border. This will help streamline the entry process and ensure your return to the U.S. or Canada goes as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Otherwise, if you do not present the required documents, you may be delayed while U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers or Canada Border Services Agency personnel attempt to verify your citizenship and identity.

Many of our current customers use NEXUS. This is a joint Customs and Immigration program implemented by The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

It is designed to enhance security and simplify Detroit-Windsor border crossings for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. To become a NEXUS member, simply submit the short application here. NEXUS applications may also be obtained at all attended Tunnel toll booths. A five-year enrollment in NEXUS costs $50.00 USD or $50.00 CDN.

Once approved, you’ll receive a NEXUS membership identification card to use when entering Canada or the United States at all designated NEXUS lanes.
